Honorary Members: LEON BRADY and KANSAS CITY YOUTH JAZZ

KANSAS CITY YOUTH JAZZ - Leon A. Brady, founder and musical director

KANSAS CITY YOUTH JAZZ - Leon A. Brady, founder and musical director | Kansas City Youth Jazz program began with one band and a handful of dedicated students and parents. In January 2001, the Kansas City Youth Jazz program began with one band and a handful of dedicated students and parents. It has since grown to 5 bands and two combos composed of over 100 students from over 50 different schools throughout greater Kansas City, including students from Lawrence, Lansing, Olathe, Raytown, Raymore-Peculiar, Lee’s Summit, Blue Valley, Blue Springs, Kansas City, MO, Independence, and Turner schools along with several students from Shawnee Mission and Kansas City, Kansas. Students have performed with Clarke Terry, Marilyn Maye and the McFadden Brothers and received clinics with international jazz artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Ali Jackson, and Bobby Watson. Participation in the advanced band is by audition and instructor recommendation. Most recently, the Reno Band was selected to perform at the Monterey Jazz Festival's 6th Annual Next Generation Festival in April of 2010. More information online at www.KCYouthJazz.org

    Honorary Members: MUTUAL MUSICIANS FOUNDATION

    Mutual Musicians Foundation

MUTUAL MUSICIANS FOUNDATION | Located in the heart of the Historic 18th and Vine Jazz District, Kansas City’s Mutual Musicians Foundation is one of the country’s principal cradles of jazz along with New York, New Orleans and Chicago. The Foundation bred numerous nationally significant big bands and a legion of talented soloists who revolutionized American jazz. Among these jazz artists are such luminaries as Count Basie, Jay McShann, Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Andy Kirk, Jimmy Rushing, Big Joe Turner, Hot Lips Page, Mary Lou Williams, Buck Clayton... Because it is the place where the Kansas City Style of Jazz was born, this building at 1823 Highland has been designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of Interior. It is also entered in the National Register of Historic Places and the Kansas City Landmarks Commission Register. Jazz has been played continuously here since 1930 when Local 627 moved into the building, making it the longest running Jazz place in the United States and in the world. TheFoundationJamsOn.org
