Artist(s): SUMI TONOOKA, ERICA LINDSAY
Title and Format: INITIATION - AUDIO CD
Track listing: Mari; Mingus Mood; South Street; Initiation; Serpent’s Tale; In the Void; Somewhere Near Heaven; Black Urgency; The Gift; Yes.
Personnel: Erica Lindsay: tenor saxophone; Sumi Tonooka: piano; Rufus Reid: bass; Bob Braye: drums.
“Initiation is rich with technique and soul, and brings together four musicians who work perfectly together. Tonooka’s piano has enormous strength and conviction, but also a penetrating sensitivity and touch. Lindsay’s saxophone is fluid, but there’s sufficient chest-poking to make you feel her creative points. Reid bounces along while Braye keeps the session exciting, rarely playing the same figure for more than a few measures. He was a fascinating drummer. If you’re sampling, try the ballads Somewhere Near Heaven and Mingus Mood. Or the uptempo hard bop opener Mari.”

Artist(s): MICHAEL JEFRY STEVENS (Southern Excursion Quartet)
Title and Format: TRADING POST – AUDIO CD
Track listing: Ashes; Out in the World; Chant 1; Chant 2; A Long and Lonely Nights Work; Longing; For Wheeler; December; Spiritual.
Personnel: Don Aliquo: saxophone; Tom Giampietro: drums; Michael Jefry Stevens: piano; Jonathan Wires: bass.
“Trading Post (Artists Recording Collective) is an album that is true to its title: a gathering place where people can meet and trade goods. In this case it’s a group of musicians who come from different places but share a love for jazz and the South, where jazz originated and still lives. Anyone who loves certain classic quartets and quintets of the 1960’s will find this a fascinating listen, not so much as a way to honor the jazz and musicians of the past, but to show how necessary that music is today.”

Title and Format: WITH AN OPEN HEART – AUDIO CD
Track listing: Subterranean Dream, It’s About Time, Now That I Know, Spur of the Moment, Phantom Carousel, Sweet and Bitter Suite: Bittersweet/Without You/With an Open Heart, How Can This Be.
Personnel: Sumi Tonooka: piano; Rufus Reid: bass; and Akira Tana: drums.
With An Open Heart represents Sumi’s first exposure on record. and there is going to be excited talk about her upon its release. The tracks that show her off to best advantage are those that catch fire from her fulgurous phrasing-hornlike in its linearity and melodic signification, percussive in its density and spring. “Piano is a percussion instrument” she says, and not surprisingly she lists among her influences a number of pianists of like mind, including Thelonius Monk, McCoy Tyner, Ahmad Jamal, and Nina Smone. But she has also been infulenced by horn players.

Artist(s): JEFF SIEGEL
Title and Format: JSQ LIVE IN EUROPE – AUDIO CD
Track listing: Elvin’s Circle; Rag Tag; Dance in the Question; Shifting Sands; Stealth; Remembering Shirley.
Personnel: Jeff “Siege” Siegel: drums; Erica Lindsay: tenor saxophone; Francesca Tanksley: piano; Danton Boller: bass.
Drummer/composer Jeff Siegel‘s Live in Europe presents highlights from two radio shows recorded overseas in 2005. Siegel’s quartet—tenor saxophonist Erica Lindsay, pianist Francesca Tanksley and bassist Danton Boller—perform four of Siegel’s compositions as well as tunes by Tanksley and Lindsay. Many groups tend to be strong in one or two areas but lacking in others; the musicians might be great soloists but not have strong writing skills. Jeff “Siege” Siegel’s quartet manages to be accomplished across the board and Live in Europe is a portrait of a stellar group of musicians and writers at their best. [Karen Hogg]
Catalogue Number: ARC-2062 (one sheet)
Artist(s): LEE SHAW
Title and Format: Lee Shaw Trio-Live in Graz – AUDIO CD/DVD
Track listing: CD: Easy Walker; Song Without Words; Elegy; Rain Threads; Street of Dreams; Foots; Stan’s Song; Night Mist Blues. DVD: Easy Walker; Lonely Town; Crazeology; Blues Eleven; plus interviews.
Personnel: Lee Shaw: piano; Rich Syracuse: bass; Jeff “Siege” Siegel: drums.
The record [Live in Graz] reveals Shaw the soloist to be squarely in the Peterson-Medeski lineage, but that hardly begins to describe her gifts. Bold and strong, her playing lavishes attention on the lower and middle ranges of the keyboard, and—metaphorically—on the architectural and emotional resources of the compositions. An emblematic case in point is her solo on Vincent Young’s “Street of Dreams,” a harmonic edifice carefully constructed, brick by brick. Shaw’s impressionist compositions, meanwhile, are song-like, deceptively simple, but with vast musical reserves lurking just beneath the surface.

Title and Format: BLOSSOM – AUDIO CD
Track listing: Blossom; Fats’ Blues; Blues 11; Holiday; Algo Triste; Cool Jack; Shifting Sands; Virtuoso Rag; Sleeper; Nipper’s Dream.
Personnel: Lee Shaw: piano; Rich Syracuse: bass; Jeff “Siege” Siegel: drums.
If anything, Blossom is even better than the live record, with tighter, more focused performances. Like its predecessor, this disc leans heavily on Shaw’s compositions, in addition to a couple of covers and a handful of tunes by her fellow trio members. Sometimes it sounds a little like we’re back in an Albany night club, sometime in 1975, as on a rollicking reading of Fats Navarro’s “Fats’ Blues,” and that’s fine. Other times, Shaw, drawing on those decades of club playing, creates something entirely new.

Artist(s): RICHIE PRATT
Title and Format: OLATHE – AUDIO CD
Track listing: Mellow Groove; Olathe; Mucho Trabajo; The Sheik of Funk; The Manhattan Sunset; Imo (Radio Edit); Imo (Full Version).
Personnel: Jazz, Bossa, Salsa and the blues are presented by legendary musicians with the leader, Richie Pratt, performing in the two ensemble formats of a Trio with Major Holley on acoustic bass and Tom Pierson on piano and then in a Septet with: David Dutemple on electric bass; Greg Kogan on piano; Billy Butler on guitar; Ross Konikoff on trumpet and flugelhorn; Robert Carten on saxophones and flute; and Tony Salvatori on bass trombone.
CD SYNOPSIS: The music on Olathe was originally engineered by Les Paul, Jr. and recorded in New York during the mid-1980s when live music and studio work were still relatively plentiful for full-time working musicians. Richie Pratt shopped his self-produced demo and was even courted by CBS, but ultimately never signed. Thus, the release of Pratt’s debut as a leader more than three decades later on the Artists Recording Collective label. Richie Pratt began sitting in with Jaki Byard and the legendary bassist, Major Holley eventually invited Pratt to jam on Sundays at Jacques; which resulted in Junior Mance hearing him play drums and offering him his first paid gig as a drummer in New York. Pratt added musical diversity by performing with the American Symphony, the Joffrey Ballet, Alvin Ailey; in the Broadway hits: Ain’t Suppose to Die; Dude; Raisin; and notably, Pratt was the drum soloist in Broadway’s smashing tribute to Duke Ellington – Sophisticated Ladies! In the traditional Jazz arena, he spent over three years as a member of the New York Jazz Quartet, which included Sir Roland Hanna, Frank Wess, and George Mraz. Pratt has also accompanied Billy Taylor, Milt Jackson, Milton Hinton, Frank Foster, Monte Alexander, Michel Legrand, Lionel Hampton, Benny Goodman, and Benny Carter among others. The lightness and sensitivity of his drumming has enhanced such legendary vocalists as: Nancy Wilson, Aretha Franklin, Marlena Shaw, Barry White, Melba Moore, the Temptations, Della Reese, Johnny Hartman, Carol Sloane, and Johnny Desmond as well.

Artist(s): WILL MATTHEWS
Title and Format: COUNT ON SWINGIN’ – AUDIO CD
Track listing: Count on Swingin,’ Corner Pocket, Can’t Help It, Mikayla’s Song, The Grease, Where There’s a Will…, Soul Changes, Milestones (old), Up and At It.
Personnel: Will Matthews: guitar; Mel Rhyne: B3 organ; Bobby Watson: alto saxophone; Kenny Phelps: drums.
Kansas City native guitarist Will Matthews joined the Count Basie Orchestra in 1996 under trombonist Grover Mitchell. His role? His role was to fill the chair of the late guitarist and composer Freddie Green. A big role to fill; Freddie Green was legendary and had been with the band for over fifty years. Matthews has traveled and toured the world and played on numerous studio recordings with the orchestra, and that includes two Grammy winning recordings. In addition, he’s played every major jazz festival, concert hall and theater in the world and has played with nearly every artist to come through Kansas City, has played for kings and performed, in 1997, with the Count Basie Orchestra for President Bill Clinton’s second inaugural. It’s been said that Matthews’s tone and phrasing is a perfect blend of George Benson, Grant Green, and Wes Montgomery. High praise and well deserved. Count on Swingin’ is Matthews’ newest release. Matthews is very articulate and has easily established himself as an accomplished soloist. His delivery hits you full in the face with a staccato delivery, cutting through the harmonic nuances. The mix of his familiar band mates sets not only a traditionally jazz feel but one with a hot approach. Organist Mel Rhyne – yes, the same Mel Rhyne who recorded with Wes Montgomery on some classic Riverside records – pushes Matthews with his blistering pace that seems to hold Watson’s romp and Phelps’ chattering drums together. The long-held ensemble tradition of guitar/organ is only made great with the drums and sax; it’s a welcome fix for those jazz addicts.

Title and Format: LONG AGO TODAY – AUDIO CD
Track listing: Be the Dance; All of You; The Clinging; Dreaming of Tibet; Quantum Question; Long Ago Today; Renewal; Morrocan Daze; Just for Now; Nami’s Song.
Personnel: Sumi Tonooka: piano; Rufus Reid: bass; Bob Braye: drums.
Players as acclaimed as Uri Caine speak highly of their fellow Philadelphian, pianist Sumi Tonooka, who deserves a far wider hearing but works at her own pace. Long Ago Today, her first leader date in 10 years and her fifth since 1990, is accurately titled in the sense that it was recorded back in 2004. Sadly, drummer Bob Braye died in the interim. But thanks in no small part to him, the music from this trio session pulses with life. Bassist Rufus Reid, Tonooka’s longtime musical associate and by far the best known of the three, completes the lineup.
Tonooka made a gripping appearance on Reid’s Live at the Kennedy Center, a 2007 CD/DVD package from Motema. Her firm attack and lush, off-centered harmonic palette had much to do with the Reid quintet’s appeal and the same qualities permeate her trio music. On “Be the Dance,” the leadoff track, she and Reid play a bass melody in coordinated, springing forward motion—the very model of ensemble counterpoint and rhythmic confidence, a nugget of jazz modernist perfection.

Artist(s): JOHN BLAKE, JR.
Title and Format: MOTHERLESS CHILD – AUDIO CD
Track listing: Motherless Child; Go Down Moses; A City Called Heaven (Violin Solo Intro); A City Called Heaven; A Balm In Gilead; Steal Away; Hold On; I Want Jesus To Walk With Me; Nobody Knows.
Personnel: John Blake Jr.: violin; Johnathan Blake: drums; Boris Kozlov: bass; Evelyn Simpson-Curenton: piano, vocals (5); Sumi Tonooka: piano (3, 4, 6, 7) Mulgrew Miller: piano (1, 8); Howard University Jazz Choir: Professor Connaitre Miller: Choir director; Danielle Withers: soprano one; Tonya Khakazi: soprano one; Rachel Robinson: soprano two; Eliza Berkon: alto one; Terri Davis: alto one, alto two; Christie Dashiell: alto two; Micah Robinson:tenor; Reginald Bowens: baritone; Alex McKeithen: bass; Brian Lawson: bass.

The music’s spirituality is undeniable but is never overwhelming. Blake’s haunting intro to “A City Called Heaven” has the same impact that is present in John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme” with its sense of reawakening. Other pieces are also touching, such as “A Balm In Gilead” with vocals and arrangement by Evelyn Simpson-Curenton and “I Want Jesus To Walk With Me” where Afro Blue provides some classy vocalizations reminiscent of Take Six. The music and songs in Motherless Child effectively honors the past and embraces the challenges of the present with optimism.

The Black House Improvisors’ Collective endeavors to help musicians work together to provide each other resources in which to develop and support each other and the Kansas City music scene.
Supportive Fellow Artists: The BHIC is dedicated to scene building. The workshops will give members of the Kansas City music scene an opportunity to play together and build working and artistic relationships. We would like to have musicians (who otherwise wouldn’t necessarily get the opportunity) working and playing together.
Mandate for New Work: The BHIC is dedicated completely to the creation of original music. Participants will be responsible for composing new work to be rehearsed and performed at the end of their residency. The workshops serve as a laboratory in which talented performers conduct experiments, not a forum in which to study older works. That being said, the stylistic direction of the workshops will be dictated completely by the participants themselves.

Title and Format: YES (LIVE AT THE ROSENDALE CAFE) – AUDIO CD
Track listing: Yes; Dusk/Fall; Dance of the Elves; Gently; Blues Up; Gotta Get to It; Night of Roses; Seriously.
Personnel: Erica Lindsay: tenor saxophone; Francesca Tanksley: piano; Otto Gardner: bass; Bob Braye: drums.
[Yes-Live at the Rosendale Cafe] Tenor saxophonist Erica Lindsay wails in the open, unfettered fashion of the late freebopper Dewey Redman at this gig in upstate New York. Accompanied by the kinetic, swinging pulse of drummer Bob Braye, the harmonically provocative pianist Francesca Tanksley and bassist Otto Gardner, Lindsay lights it up on the urgent title track, the cooker “Dance of the Elves” and the modal “Gotta Get to It.” Elsewhere, she blows with elegance and grace on the introspective “Dusk-Fall” and the mesmerizing “Night of Roses.”

Title and Format: I’M OLD FASHIONED – AUDIO CD
Track listing: I’m Old Fashioned, Accentchuate the Positive, Boy From Ipanema, Another Walkin’ Blues, Nature Boy, The Shadow of Your Smile, Lush Life, Speak Low, Falling in Love with Love, Sway.
Personnel: Toni Gates: vocals; Tom Ransom: guitar; Sam Beckett: piano;Chris Burnett: flute and alto sax; Monique Danielle and Teri Wilder: vocals on “Sway”; Steve Rigazzi: bass; Clarence Smith: drums and percussion.
The bio on Toni Gates Web site (www.tonigates.com, where this disc can be obtained) tells us that she has been singing since she could talk, and has been surrounded by music and a variety of musical influences her whole life. She has taken in these influences, trained and studied, and emerged as a personal artist. On I’m Old Fashioned Gates and crew present a less-than-LP-length CD of ten tracks, all of which are fairly standard fare except for the original “Another Walkin’ Blues”. The approach to the standards is to keep it fresh and personal, a near-impossible task given the recorded history of the material. The result is enjoyable, even if these particular interpretations may never be the version you’ll tend to slap into the machine. As I said, the competition out there is pretty well established. Toni has a strong voice, with a tight and not-too-fast vibrato. It is apparent that the voice would work in a wide variety of settings, from church to stage to cabaret to larger band, and you can imagine it singing just as wide a variety of material.

Title and Format: TIME FLIES (ORIGINAL MASTER) – AUDIO CD
Track listing: Time Flies, Whenever We Cry, Bagnoli Blues, Another Tribe, Circles, Waltz For Mom, To Each His Own.
Personnel: Chris Burnett (BMI): alto saxophone, soprano saxophone, composer, arranger, producer; Jeff Stewart: piano; Ben Lewis: piano, MIDI Jazz Network; Elliot Kuykendall: acoustic and electric basses; Ken Baldwin: drum set; Bob Habib: Latin percussion.
Time Flies is the critically praised and commercially successful debut recording by this Kansas City saxophonist and award-winning composer. Upon the initial public release of the music on Time Flies, Damian Hagger, then a jazz genre manager with the media giant, Vivendi Universal, called Burnett’s work on his debut as leader: “Technically complex, yet exotically beautiful music that contemporary jazz lovers will devour.” Hagger’s 2001 review proved prophetic in the fact that at the close of the former online music distribution company MP3.com in 2003, the music on Time Flies had been downloaded over 509,000 times in just two years; and, also purchased by numerous jazz fans from over 38 countries worldwide. This fact alone established Chris Burnett as the most downloaded of all independent acoustic jazz artists in the entire 7-year history of the original MP3.com. Prior to being bought by CNET, the original MP3.com now only remains significant in this context due to the fact that it was also the very first major music digital distribution company on earth.
