Initiation CD Enters Chart at #39

“Initiation” (ARC-2000) enters the Jazz Charts at #39…

Initiation, the dynamic new Artists Recording Collective CD by pianist Sumi Tonooka (pronounced To-NO-ka) and tenor saxophonist Erica Lindsay, showcases their shared skills as composers and bandleaders. Though they’ve been playing together since they first met in the spring of 1994, this is their first in-studio collaboration. “We wanted to document and reveal something of our musical dynamic together,” says Tonooka. Initiation features bassist Rufus Reid and the late drummer Bob Braye, both of whom were on Tonooka’s previous trio release, Long Ago Today, which earned critical acclaim and a place on numerous top CDs of 2008 lists.  Initiation was released on January 12, 2010.

Initiation has entered the JazzWeek Charts at number 39 and has begun to receive significant Radio Airplay from Jazz Programmers around the world!

• CKMN-FM – Quebec,   Canada – Hi Mark, First of all, Happy musical year 2010. Sure, I will spin your artists as usual.
• KRFC - FT. Collins, CO – Mark: Howzzit ~~~~ I’m makin’ elfry effort. UBetcha. This is a happenin’ CD. In my scopezz. UTNG, djSOS ~~~~.
• KSUT – Ignacio, CO – I’ll be playing this one.
• WCLV – Cleveland, OH – the Sumi Tonooka/Erica Lindsay disc should be on 1/24.  You do handle some good players.

• WWNO – New Orleans, LA – Considerably less approachable and much darker overall than her last (but chronologically more recent) release, which I played extensively.  This’ll get some spins, though. JH

• WVUD – Newark, DE – There is no question that we’ll be airing the Sumi Tonooka CD. She is one of the greatly underappreciated musicians in jazz! SO, I like being able to do my bit to correct that. Also, she lives and works in this region (Delaware, though neither entity will admit it, is suburban Philly). That’s the best CD to have come my way in a while. Thanks for sending it.
